Boeing and Delta Air Lines today announced the U.S. carrier placed its first direct order for up to 60 787 Dreamliners to support long-haul international growth and renew the airline’s widebody fleet. Delta’s purchase of 30 787-10 jets – with opportunity for up to 30 more of the largest 787 variant – will enable the airline’s expansion and modernization plans on high-demand transatlantic and South American routes.

“Delta is building the fleet for the future, enhancing the customer experience, driving operational improvements and providing steady replacements for less efficient, older aircraft in the decade to come,” said Ed Bastian, Delta’s chief executive officer. “Most importantly, these aircraft will be operated by the best aviation professionals in the industry, providing Delta’s welcoming, elevated and caring service to travelers worldwide.”

With capacity for up to 336 passengers and 25% lower fuel use than the airplanes it replaces, the 787-10 offers the lowest operating cost per seat of any widebody airplane. Delivering superior comfort for passengers, the 787 Dreamliner features the largest windows of any widebody airplane flying today and air that is pressurized at a lower cabin altitude, which will help Delta’s customers arrive at their destinations feeling more refreshed.

“We are excited that Delta Air Lines has selected the 787-10 to join its fleet of the future. The 787 Dreamliner’s unmatched efficiency, range, and passenger comfort make it a perfect fit for Delta’s international expansion and fleet modernization,” said Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “Our team looks forward to delivering new Dreamliners to Delta and supporting their commitments to provide an exceptional passenger experience and advance sustainability in aviation.”

With more than 460 Boeing airplanes currently in service, Delta has flown most Boeing single-aisle and widebody models across its domestic and international networks over the decades. This new widebody order further strengthens that partnership and supports U.S. aerospace manufacturing jobs across Boeing’s production system and supply chain.

Today’s purchase brings Delta’s firm order book to 130 Boeing airplanes, including the airline’s order for 100 737-10 jets. The efficiency and flexibility of the 787-10 and 737-10 will enable Delta to fly more passengers on more routes as the airline expands and diversifies its network.

A leading global aerospace company and top U.S. exporter, Boeing develops, manufactures and services commercial airplanes, defense products and space systems for customers in more than 150 countries. Our U.S. and global workforce and supplier base drive innovation, economic opportunity, sustainability and community impact. Boeing is committed to fostering a culture based on our core values of safety, quality and integrity.

If 1 billion people stood in line to board an airplane at the same time, spaced three feet apart, the line would wrap around the Earth about 23 times.

That fact shows the significance of the 787 Dreamliner family’s latest milestone, carrying 1 billion passengers in less than 14 years since entering service in 2011.

Why it matters: The 787 family has accomplished this feat faster than any widebody airplane in history, dependably supporting airline customers and safely carrying passengers to destinations all over the world.

"You're serving other families so they can make memories across the whole world," said Celine Dobson, 787 Lean practitioner. "That's super important because family and memories is who we are."

"People trust us with their most treasured memories," said Jonathan Hoehl, 787 Equipment engineer. "If you're going someplace special, someplace that people save up all year for, we're the ones taking you there."

"One billion is a whole lot of customers," said Tim Mason, 787 senior Operations manager. "I think it's incredible that so many people put their trust in us to get them from point A to point B safely."

Milestone video: To mark the moment, Boeing released a video honoring the passengers, partners and people behind the success of the 787 Dreamliner family.

"This milestone would not have been possible without the trust and confidence of our customers in operating the 787, and we are incredibly grateful for each of them," said Scott Stocker, 787 program vice president and general manager. "This achievement reflects the dedication, talent and innovation of the teammates and partners who have brought the 787 family to life. To every operator flying the 787, and every one of the 1 billion passengers who have flown on a Dreamliner, thank you."

The big picture: The global 787 fleet of more than 1,175 airplanes has flown nearly 5 million flights covering more than 30 million flight hours. Here are some facts about the Dreamliner fleet:

Each day there are about 2,100 flights carrying more than 480,000 passengers, or about 14.5 million passengers per month

The 787 Dreamliner operates across more than 85 countries and 520 airports

It has opened more than 425 nonstop routes between destinations that were not served previously

On average, each 787 is in the air more than 12 hours per day — showcasing strong global demand and reliability.

“Thank you to our Boeing team, our supplier partners and our customers for making this milestone possible,” said Stephanie Pope, Commercial Airplanes president and CEO. “Passengers love the Dreamliner for its larger windows, quieter cabin, improved humidity, and lower cabin altitude pressurization. Here’s to the next billion!”

Learn more about the 787 Dreamliner difference: Check out the interactive experience that highlights the unique ways airlines are using the 787 to connect the world and hear more from our teammates about what this milestone means to them.

Go deeper: Employees are invited to share their 787 memories and stories on social media using hashtag #Dreamliner.

Boeing today announced it plans to expand its operations in Charleston County. The company plans to invest $1 billion in infrastructure upgrades at its existing site and create 500 new jobs over the next five years.

On Dec. 12, 2024, the South Carolina Department of Commerce issued the following news release regarding the expansion of Boeing South Carolina:

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Boeing (NYSE:BA) today announced it plans to expand its operations in Charleston County. The company plans to invest $1 billion in infrastructure upgrades at its existing site and create 500 new jobs over the next five years.

For more than a decade, Boeing South Carolina (BSC) has been the home of the full 787 Dreamliner production cycle and fabricates, assembles, and delivers, the 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10 to customers globally. The company established operations in South Carolina in 2009 and currently employs more than 7,800 people across its Airport and North Campuses in North Charleston, and its West Campus in Orangeburg. Boeing acquired the operations in Orangeburg, located at 174 Millennium Drive, earlier this year, though those facilities will not be affected by the expansion plans.

Boeing will expand both of its North Charleston campuses, located at 5400 International Blvd. and 9775 Patriot Blvd., to support increased 787 Dreamliner production targets and potential future rate increases driven by market demand. The 787 Dreamliner program plans to increase to a rate of 10 airplanes per month by 2026.

Operations are expected to be online in early 2027. Individuals interested in joining the Boeing team should visit the company’s careers page.

This past summer, more than 50 high school students across the state of South Carolina stepped out of the classroom and onto the factory floor as part of several student development programs at Boeing South Carolina.

Under the supervision of workplace coaches, Manufacturing Student Development Program participants learned some of the foundational elements of airplane assembly. (Xavier Navarro/Boeing photo)

“Walking into Boeing South Carolina every day and seeing these airplanes out on the floor—it doesn’t get old,” said Summerville High School senior Gabe Dela Cruz.

Dela Cruz’s Aerospace Engineering teacher initially encouraged him to apply for the manufacturing program he took part in. Now, after completing the program, he’s gained foundational training for mechanics, including learning how to use various drills and apply sealant to carbon composite and other materials.

“Once I started getting my hands dirty, I was like, man, this is for me,” Dela Cruz said.

Gabe Dela Cruz undergoes assembly training in one of BSC’s training facilities. (Xavier Navarro/Boeing photo)

Four hands-on learning programs provide students skills and experience to explore what it’s like working in manufacturing. These programs include the following:

High School Manufacturing Student Development Program: A six-week paid work-based learning experience focused on manufacturing training and skill development in paint and assembly.

High School Engineering Program: An eight-week program for high school seniors supporting Engineering, Quality, and Operations.

High School Fulfillment Program: A seven-week program for high school seniors interested in Supply Chain and logistics. Students assisted with processing and moving materials into and out of storage and other locations to support the flow of production.

Youth Apprenticeship Program: A two-year, year-round program for students interested in mechatronics, supported by Trident Technical College. It combines dual-credit coursework with onsite employment.

Annabel Brenkert, a senior from West Ashley Center for Advanced Studies who participated in the Manufacturing Development program, also enjoyed the hands-on training.

“You get to see what people are doing, how they do it, and what an actual day is like. You’re working the entire time, and it’s really cool because I feel like I have a bigger job,” Brenkert said.

Beyond the training, Brenkert appreciated meeting other teammates and learning about their experiences on the factory floor.

“Everyone I’ve talked to who has worked here for 10 or 20 years is just so happy,” she said. “To think of being able to work in an environment that allows me to be that happy…would be really amazing.”

At the July 6 Charleston RiverDogs game, Boeing South Carolina volunteers and their family members participated in the pre-game ceremonies honoring veterans and military members as part of an Independence Day weekend celebration.

About 20 BSC teammates joined National Park Service staff from Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie on the field to present a large American flag during the singing of the National Anthem. The flag displayed was a replica of the 33 Star United States flag that flew over Fort Sumter before the beginning of the Civil War.

“This was a great experience for our family, especially my 11-year-old son,” said Natalie Kruse, BSC’s enterprise food services analyst, who attended the game with her family. “My son has always been proud that I work for Boeing, but being on the field as part of the BSC team and seeing our support of veterans and the military brought it to a new level.”

The game was the minor league baseball team’s second Boeing-sponsored Military Appreciation Night of the season. All veterans and service members and their received free admission to the game.

The next RiverDogs Military Appreciation Night will be Aug. 8.

On May 8, 64 South Carolina high school seniors were honored at the eighth annual SC STEM Signing Day. Boeing was the presenting sponsor of the event.

Similar to college signing days for athletes, the students were recognized for their intent to pursue a two- or four-year degree in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) field after graduating from high school.

The ceremony was held at the University of South Carolina Alumni Center and honorees were recognized by the SC House of Representatives, SC Senate, and Governor McMaster at the Statehouse during the afternoon. The event concluded with a legislative lunch outside the statehouse where students could network with lawmakers, business executives and each other.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster spoke with the honorees outside the Statehouse.

What they’re saying: “We are thrilled to continue the tradition of recognizing outstanding high school seniors from across South Carolina who have committed to pursuing STEM degrees,” saidErica Parrott, Director and Chief Engineer of Production Engineering for the 787 Program who spoke during the event. “Our hope for these students is that they will keep their curiosity muscle strong by continuing to ask, ‘why,’ digging into how things work and developing innovative solutions to complex problems.”

“STEM Signing Day was really inspiring to attend,” said Alexis Khalil, a tooling engineer at BSC who attended the event. “From talking to various students one-on-one, it is clear that the next generation of STEM students are very talented. It was also a very full circle moment for me – I remember taking engineering classes in high school, which is where my passion for my career began.”

Go deeper: Created in 2017 in South Carolina, STEM Signing Day has expanded to 14 states and has honored more than 2,000 high school seniors, celebrating the next generation of STEM talent. Over 700 South Carolinians have participated in SC STEM Signing Day in the last seven years. Students across the state applied to be a part of STEM Signing Day through Tallo, an online platform that connects talent with opportunities and is available to all South Carolina students through the SC Future Makers initiative.

Boeing South Carolina’s chapter of the Employees Community Fund of Boeing (ECF) is proud to announce that $119,000 was donated to 47 Lowcountry nonprofit organizations in 2023.

Why it matters: “The ECF provides a way we can all support our local community. Our communities need our support, and each of us has the power to make a difference,” said Erica Parrott, Director and Chief Engineer of Production Engineering for the 787 Program and BSC ECF Executive Sponsor. “Big or small your donation will impact the community where we live, work, and raise our families.”
