Boeing and Delta Air Lines today announced the U.S. carrier placed its first direct order for up to 60 787 Dreamliners to support long-haul international growth and renew the airline’s widebody fleet. Delta’s purchase of 30 787-10 jets – with opportunity for up to 30 more of the largest 787 variant – will enable the airline’s expansion and modernization plans on high-demand transatlantic and South American routes.

“Delta is building the fleet for the future, enhancing the customer experience, driving operational improvements and providing steady replacements for less efficient, older aircraft in the decade to come,” said Ed Bastian, Delta’s chief executive officer. “Most importantly, these aircraft will be operated by the best aviation professionals in the industry, providing Delta’s welcoming, elevated and caring service to travelers worldwide.”

With capacity for up to 336 passengers and 25% lower fuel use than the airplanes it replaces, the 787-10 offers the lowest operating cost per seat of any widebody airplane. Delivering superior comfort for passengers, the 787 Dreamliner features the largest windows of any widebody airplane flying today and air that is pressurized at a lower cabin altitude, which will help Delta’s customers arrive at their destinations feeling more refreshed.

“We are excited that Delta Air Lines has selected the 787-10 to join its fleet of the future. The 787 Dreamliner’s unmatched efficiency, range, and passenger comfort make it a perfect fit for Delta’s international expansion and fleet modernization,” said Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “Our team looks forward to delivering new Dreamliners to Delta and supporting their commitments to provide an exceptional passenger experience and advance sustainability in aviation.”

With more than 460 Boeing airplanes currently in service, Delta has flown most Boeing single-aisle and widebody models across its domestic and international networks over the decades. This new widebody order further strengthens that partnership and supports U.S. aerospace manufacturing jobs across Boeing’s production system and supply chain.

Today’s purchase brings Delta’s firm order book to 130 Boeing airplanes, including the airline’s order for 100 737-10 jets. The efficiency and flexibility of the 787-10 and 737-10 will enable Delta to fly more passengers on more routes as the airline expands and diversifies its network.

A leading global aerospace company and top U.S. exporter, Boeing develops, manufactures and services commercial airplanes, defense products and space systems for customers in more than 150 countries. Our U.S. and global workforce and supplier base drive innovation, economic opportunity, sustainability and community impact. Boeing is committed to fostering a culture based on our core values of safety, quality and integrity.

On Nov. 20, 2009, Boeing broke ground for a final assembly and delivery location for the 787 Dreamliner in North Charleston, SC.

Fifteen years ago, on Nov. 20, 2009, history was made as Boeing broke ground a final assembly and delivery location for the 787 Dreamliner in North Charleston, SC. The decision established North Charleston as only the third location in the world to produce and delivery widebody commercial airplanes.

The announcement was “confirmation that Boeing had confidence in our ability to build its airplanes in South Carolina,” said Robert Flynt, a teammate in Aftbody. Robert worked at Boeing Charleston (as the Aftbody facility was known then) at the time of the announcement in 2009 and remembers that the decision gave the team “a feeling of stability for our future.”

Establishing South Carolina as a 787 Dreamliner final assembly and delivery location helped expand Boeing’s production capability to meet customer demand for the airplane. The site was already performing fabrication, assembly and systems installation for the 787 aft fuselage sections, and joining and integrating 787 fuselage sections from structural partners.

“It’s hard to believe it’s already been 15 years since we broke ground,” said Scott Stocker, 787 vice president and general manager, and Boeing South Carolina site leader. “Boeing has invested more than $2.5 billion in South Carolina in that time, and we’re going to continue to invest in this team and site so we can meet customer demand for the 787. While these are challenging times for our company, customers love this airplane and demand for the 787 is high. It’s an opportunity to make the future ours in Boeing South Carolina.”

Being part of the South Carolina community for the last 15 years is important to Boeing. The company has invested more than $100 million with charitable organizations throughout South Carolina, with an emphasis on education, arts and culture, health and human service es, civic engagement, and the environment.

In addition, the DreamLearners program, which is an education outreach program for middle and high-school aged students, has engaged with more than one million students in South Carolina. BSC teammates also donate locally through the Employee’s Community Fund, giving more than $2.2 million to Charleston area organizations to date.

Boeing today announced it plans to expand its operations in Charleston County. The company plans to invest $1 billion in infrastructure upgrades at its existing site and create 500 new jobs over the next five years.

On Dec. 12, 2024, the South Carolina Department of Commerce issued the following news release regarding the expansion of Boeing South Carolina:

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Boeing (NYSE:BA) today announced it plans to expand its operations in Charleston County. The company plans to invest $1 billion in infrastructure upgrades at its existing site and create 500 new jobs over the next five years.

For more than a decade, Boeing South Carolina (BSC) has been the home of the full 787 Dreamliner production cycle and fabricates, assembles, and delivers, the 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10 to customers globally. The company established operations in South Carolina in 2009 and currently employs more than 7,800 people across its Airport and North Campuses in North Charleston, and its West Campus in Orangeburg. Boeing acquired the operations in Orangeburg, located at 174 Millennium Drive, earlier this year, though those facilities will not be affected by the expansion plans.

Boeing will expand both of its North Charleston campuses, located at 5400 International Blvd. and 9775 Patriot Blvd., to support increased 787 Dreamliner production targets and potential future rate increases driven by market demand. The 787 Dreamliner program plans to increase to a rate of 10 airplanes per month by 2026.

Operations are expected to be online in early 2027. Individuals interested in joining the Boeing team should visit the company’s careers page.

On May 8, 64 South Carolina high school seniors were honored at the eighth annual SC STEM Signing Day. Boeing was the presenting sponsor of the event.

Similar to college signing days for athletes, the students were recognized for their intent to pursue a two- or four-year degree in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) field after graduating from high school.

The ceremony was held at the University of South Carolina Alumni Center and honorees were recognized by the SC House of Representatives, SC Senate, and Governor McMaster at the Statehouse during the afternoon. The event concluded with a legislative lunch outside the statehouse where students could network with lawmakers, business executives and each other.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster spoke with the honorees outside the Statehouse.

What they’re saying: “We are thrilled to continue the tradition of recognizing outstanding high school seniors from across South Carolina who have committed to pursuing STEM degrees,” saidErica Parrott, Director and Chief Engineer of Production Engineering for the 787 Program who spoke during the event. “Our hope for these students is that they will keep their curiosity muscle strong by continuing to ask, ‘why,’ digging into how things work and developing innovative solutions to complex problems.”

“STEM Signing Day was really inspiring to attend,” said Alexis Khalil, a tooling engineer at BSC who attended the event. “From talking to various students one-on-one, it is clear that the next generation of STEM students are very talented. It was also a very full circle moment for me – I remember taking engineering classes in high school, which is where my passion for my career began.”

Go deeper: Created in 2017 in South Carolina, STEM Signing Day has expanded to 14 states and has honored more than 2,000 high school seniors, celebrating the next generation of STEM talent. Over 700 South Carolinians have participated in SC STEM Signing Day in the last seven years. Students across the state applied to be a part of STEM Signing Day through Tallo, an online platform that connects talent with opportunities and is available to all South Carolina students through the SC Future Makers initiative.

During the month of February, Boeing South Carolina is honoring Black History Month by sharing the voices of our teammates.

Garrett Jackson is a Structural Analysis Engineer for the Loads Core team at Propulsion South Carolina. Jackson has been with Boeing for eight years and is a member of the South Carolina chapter of the Boeing Black Employees Association (BBEA-SC) and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).

Jackson (left) poses with other North Carolina A&T graduates at the NSBE 44th Annual Convention in 2018. (Garrett Jackson photo)

Jackson believes Black History Month is a time to reflect on historical events and the traditions of African Americans.

“It’s important to look toward history to uncover things that were often overlooked or undervalued. That insight into the past often helps on the journey to shape your future,” said Jackson.

Jackson is committed to investing in the community around him, especially students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), as he is a graduate of one himself – North Carolina A&T State University. He has volunteered with the HBCU Buddy Program serving as a mentor to college students.

Jackson’s goal is to inspire others as his family inspired him.

“My family always instilled in me the value of Black History Month. I was named after the inventor Garrett Morgan, and I was exposed to many other historical and influential African Americans,” Jackson said. “My family wanted me to feel like I could accomplish whatever it was that I set my mind to.”
